of motion that is possible for this bone. Notice the red and blue axis lines on the shape that correspond to
X- and Z-axes, respectively. These restrictions are set in the Armature Bones panel. Figure 9.18 shows the
settings for the mother's collarbone.

The top row of buttons ( Lock X Rot , etc.) completely prevent rotation around that axis. A collarbone should
never roll or rotate along its own length, so Y-axis rotation was locked. I also wanted a very limited range of
motion along the other two axes, so the Limit buttons were enabled for X- and Z-axis rotation. How much
to limit? Well, that depends
entirely on your situation. Think
about what should be physically
possible for the joint in ques-
tion. If you are working with
human (or humanoid) charac-
ters, move your own body and
carefully observe how your joints
rotate: Along which axes do they
never move, where do they stop,
where can they not go? As you
adjust the minimum and maxi-
mum values for each limit, the
umbrella changes its shape to
match the settings, giving you
visual feedback for your choices.
Figure 9.19 shows several differ-
ent lock and limit setups with
their corresponding umbrellas.
