Removing Noise and Adjusting Levels
Open one of your recorded sound fi les in Audacity. Using the left mouse button, click and drag in the fl at
area at the beginning of the sound, as in Figure 8.10. This is the area of quiet that you hopefully left at the
beginning of each of your recordings. With this area selected, choose
Noise Removal
from the
Effect
menu. The
Noise Removal
dialog appears, with two steps, each of which are shown in Figure 8.11. Choose
Get Noise Profi le
. This option examines the area of “quiet” that you selected previously. The dialog disap-
pears, returning you to the sound fi le.

Use
Ctrl-A
or double-click anywhere within the sound clip to select the entire piece for processing.
Reselect
Noise Removal
from the
Effect
menu. This time, simply click
OK
to start the removal process.
