Part 5
Exadata Software
Exadata's most important feature is the unique software deployed on the storage servers, or storage cells.
While it's true that Oracle delivers a fast combination of redundant hardware components at each layer in
the Exadata technology stack, it is through Exadata's software that organizations can truly realize extreme
performance. In short, the hardware infrastructure is fast, capable, and balanced, and the software features
enable Exadata to maximize utilization and reduce the demand for physical compute or storage resources.
The chapters in this section present real-life solutions for understanding and leveraging Exadata's
software features, including Smart Scan, Hybrid Columnar Compression, I/O Resource Management, Smart
Flash Cache and Smart Flash Logging, and Storage Indexes. These software features primarily execute with the
cell services software on each Exadata storage cell and, while some of the features work automatically, several
require planning and a step-by-step approach in order to successfully deploy and realize the benefits from. In
this section, we will arm you with the information needed to identify when and how the software features are
used, measure the performance gains, and confidently plan and configure your databases to take advantage
of each software component.
