Monitoring Exadata
Exadata runs the Oracle Database and, specifically, Oracle 11gR2. On Exadata, your database storage uses
Oracle ASM and your instances will typically be deployed into an Oracle RAC cluster. With Oracle 11gR2,
Oracle has seeded a number of Exadata-specific performance statistics and wait events into its kernel.
In addition to your Oracle 11gR2 databases, Exadata's architecture is configured with a number of storage
servers, or storage cells, that comprise the Exadata Storage Grid. Each storage cell captures alerts, metrics,
and I/O request information.
Successfully monitoring Exadata environments is a matter of identifying which statistics or metrics
Oracle has introduced into its software and knowing how to interpret the values from these statistics. The
chapters in this section present a number of Exadata-monitoring techniques and solutions geared to solving
real-life monitoring challenges so that, as an Exadata DMA, you will know how to find the information you
need and, further, how to interpret the data.
