The author would like to thank Amgen's management for the support of this
program as well as the many scientists that contributed to the TRPV1 research
described in this chapter. Their tireless dedication, determination, and persis-
tence to the project were inspirational. Special thanks go to Narender Gavva,
James Treanor, Elizabeth Doherty, Anthony Bannon, Sekhar Surapaneni,
Sonya Lehto and Nuria Tamayo, for their outstanding contributions to this
research program. Finally, appreciation goes to Andrew Tasker and for criti-
cally proof reading this chapter.

4. For example, several nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (also known as
NSAIDs; e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen) have been developed that
help patients cope with many types of chronic pain. For the management of
more severe pain, narcotics such as morphine, codeine, and methadone can
be effective analgesic agents. More recent entries to the battery of pain
therapeutics include drugs such as Lyrica, Neurontin, and Cymbalta that
were originally developed for alternative indications. In addition to their
anticonvulsant or antidepressant activities, these agents have also been
found to be effective in treating various pain indications such as fibro-
myalgia, diabetic neuropathy, and post-herpetic neuralgia.
