In-Depth Information
The basic steps are fairly simple, and you can use a whitelist to ensure that only you and
your trusted family or friends can join. For now, we'll set up the server on the local net-
work. You can actually do this even if you have just one PC hosting the server and access-
ing it from the Minecraft client simultaneously.
Follow these steps and you'll be up and running in no time:
1. First download the server software from http://minecraft.net/download . Choose the
.exe file if you're running Windows, or the .jar file for any other platform.
2. Create a new folder and move the downloaded software to it.
3. Double-click or open the downloaded file to launch the server. You'll see a win-
dow similar to that shown in Figure 13.13 .
FIGURE 13.13 The Minecraft Server provides a clean interface for managing players and
should run well in the background on all but very low specification PCs.
The server does a few things on first run, generating a new world and also creating a num-
ber of configuration files. The world generates into a folder called, appropriately enough,
world ,inthesamedirectoryastheserversoftware.ItsformatisthesameasthosetheMine-
craft client creates, so if you'd like to share out a world you've already created, shut down
the server and copy that world from the saves directory of your Minecraft application into
the server directory, and then rename the folder world . Restart the server to share it.
