In-Depth Information
6. Take your diamond pickaxe in hand and start mining obsidian! Obsidian takes a
while to break, so be patient. There's also a good chance you'll expose more lava
under the obsidian as you go. Pour some more water on top of that lava to convert
any surrounding blocks to obsidian, and then scoop the water back up into your
bucket to use again. Mine more obsidian than just the four blocks you need for the
enchantment table. Try to gather at least 14 blocks in all, as you'll use the remain-
ing 10 to create a Nether portal in Chapter 12 , “ Playing Through: The Nether and
The End , ” and you'll need to visit that before creating a brewing stand later in this
chapter.
Crafting Topics
Topics have several uses: they're used for crafting the enchantment table, for boosting
its powers with bookshelves, and for storing enchantments. (They can also help you play
Minecraft!)
Topics require three pieces of paper and one piece of leather, although on Xbox and Pocket
Editions you can leave out the leather—those editions must only contain paperbacks.
Start by crafting paper from three pieces of sugarcane. Then bind the paper with leather to
make a topic. Go ahead and make as many as possible because you'll need up to 45 topics
to create a full set of bookshelves to surround the enchanting table. (Don't drop everything
to do this, though: you can build up to it, starting with just a few.)
Casting Enchantments
Now that you have the raw ingredients it becomes much easier. Follow these steps:
