Third, if the data contains a temporal component, you are asked to specify
which attributes contain the temporal values. Since this data has no
temporal component, leave the selection blank.
Select “OK”.
When the viewer initially opens, there is no data selected to show.
Before selecting the data to show, zoom in on just the 48 contiguous states
by stretching a rubber band over those states. Click and drag from above
and to the left of Washington past Maine on the right and down to fully
include Florida on the bottom, then release.
In the “Show data for” drop-down, select MedianAge. (See Figure 2.29.)
The data is encoded using color similar to the encoding in the correlation
matrix (Figure 2.30). A pale yellow represents the low value, while a fully
saturated blue represents the high value. The color encoding enables a pre-
attentive pop-out effect. Without conscious analysis, you should immediately
recognize that Utah has the youngest population.
To read actual data values, hover over the state. While over Utah you see a
median age of 28.5 years. Over Maine, the oldest state, you see a median
age of 41.5.
