Mancha Suffers a Slight Accident
Near a signal station, overlooking the bend near the Culebra Cut a photographer wished to
takesomepicturesofus.Justafterhehaddonethis,InoticedthatManchawasliftinghisnear
hindleg. Upon examining it I found that he had a deep cut just below the pastern joint. He
must have cut himself when he stepped into a wire that was lying on the path where we had
made a short cut to save time and distance. He was very lame by the time we arrived at Camp
Gaillard,asthearmypostwascalled,andthepolicemantookmetotheguardhouse,wherethe
officer on duty immediately said that he would see that I was assisted.
I was very puzzled when I heard the soldiers speak to me in very broken English, and also
whenIfoundthatthemajoritydidnotunderstandthislanguageatall.AllworeAmericanuni-
forms and had the regulation equipment, and on a mast fluttered the stars and stripes. Rather
perplexed I asked for an explanation, and was told that this regiment consisted almost entirely
of Porto Ricans, with the exception of the officers and a few men.
