gested that ocean conditions don't just occur outside the Golden Gate. In-
stead, the ocean influences almost every element of the estuary—the
weight and temperature of the air and water, the types of marine species to
be found in the bay—from year to year and decade to decade.
In March 2007, a five-year-old boy playing on Marin's McNear's Beach
found one of Conomos's drifters more than thirty years after it was re-
leased under the Golden Gate. Though a bit beaten up, it still looked very
much like a yellow plastic sea daisy with a red stem. The boy's mother
tracked down the local USGS office in Menlo Park and found a couple of
scientists who still remembered the experiment. Soon afterward young
Leaf Allen received the long-promised 50-cent reward, as well as a packet
of USGS pencils and postcards.
