Sediments hitching a ride on river flows can take months to find their
way to a final settling place. Many go through a repetitive cycle of move-
ment with the tides, depositing on a slack tide when water stops moving
for a few minutes, then getting picked up again when the tides change.
Wind-driven waves also pick up and put down sediments intermittently.
