Efforts to save these and other species from extinction—and to support
remaining bird, fish, and mammal populations around the watershed—
eventually evolved into a battle to preserve their last remaining wild habi-
tats, and later to restore and create new ones (see pp. 209 and 237, “Resto-
ration Frontiers”). In the North Bay, the first sparks in the wetland
preservation battle came from duck hunters, who favored dabbling ducks
