“Though urbanized, the bay still has high biodiversity, mostly because
of conservation efforts that have retained some historic habitats and re-
stored others,” says John Takekawa, a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Geo-
logical Survey. “The wildlife populations have protection, but their pres-
ence is not assured. Increased population pressures will continue to affect
their habitats. We must reduce disturbance and create undisturbed reserve
areas for wildlife. And we must value and teach an ethic of conservation
and pride in the natural resources of the estuary.”
