Creating Smart Collections
Once you've set up your search criteria in the Filter window, you can save it as a Smart Collection for future
use. The great thing about Smart Collections is that they dynamically update as you add more files with the at-
tributes set out in their Filter window. However, even though you can use the Filter window to search through
multiple Events or drives selected in the Event Library, a Smart Collection can be created only from a single
Event. If you intend to create a Smart Collection from your Filter results, you should choose an Event from the
Event Library before you configure the Filter window.
To create a Smart Collection, click the New Smart Collection button in the Filter window (a Smart Collection is
created from the conditions set in the Filter window), or choose File New Smart Collection or press +Op-
tion+N.
To add or change search items for a Smart Collection, double-click it in the Event Library to bring up its Filter
window.
Organizing Collections into folders
Folders can be created inside Events to help organize the various Collections that you create during an edit. Fin-
al Cut Pro doesn't allow Events and individual clips from the Event Browser to be placed into folders; it allows
only Keyword Collections and Smart Collections to be placed into folders. As you can see in Figure 4.16, six
Keyword Collections from Pranks have been organized into a folder named Sequences . There is also a folder
named People that contain the Smart Collections created by Final Cut Pro during import.
To create a new folder, select an Event in the Event Library and choose File New Folders, Control-click on an
Event and select New Folder, or just press Shift+ +N. A new folder appears inside the Event with the name
field highlighted. Type a name for your folder and press Return.
Working with Metadata
Metadata is information about the media that you bring in to Final Cut Pro. This can be information generated
by the camera that was used to capture the media or information that has been manually entered by the user dur-
ing the logging process. You've already had a glimpse of the metadata that Final Cut Pro displays when you
