chapter 2
Final Cut Pro X Essentials
Hopefully you're excited and itching to get started now that you're familiar with the movie that you'll be work-
ing on. Pranks will be edited using Final Cut Pro X, and this chapter gets you up and running with the software if
you've never used it before. The DVD media that is provided with this topic can be used in any nonlinear editor
(NLE) that can play Apple ProRes files; however, you'll get the most out of the media and the topic if you follow
along in Final Cut Pro.
Final Cut Pro X offers an affordable entry point to the world of professional editing, but don't be fooled by its
iMovie looks—there's a lot of power under the hood. Final Cut Pro has been completely rewritten from the
ground up as a 64-bit application enabling you to access more of your computer's memory and work with larger
and more complex projects. It also uses OS X features such as Grand Central Dispatch (GCD) and OpenCL,
which take advantage of a computer's multiple cores and graphics processor to speed up some of the more intens-
ive processing tasks.
Final Cut Pro automatically saves as you work and offers unlimited undos, just in case you make a few mistakes
along the way. Undoing an action is achieved in the usual way, by selecting Edit Undo or by pressing +Z.
You'll be exploring more of Final Cut Pro's capabilities as you edit the movie and work through the topic, but be-
fore getting started, there are some issues you need to consider in order to run the program effectively on your
system.
Getting Up and Running
