During filming, each new shot setup is assigned a new slate number. The amount of times or takes the director
shoots that particular slate also is listed by the assistant camera operator on a clapperboard. The clapperboard is
recorded before each take (or sometimes after); it helps not only identify the take in question, but also with the
synchronization of the picture and sound later in the edit (see Chapter 8).
Following the slate and take number, the script supervisor notes whether the shot in question was recorded
without sound. This is indicated with the abbreviation MOS, and heralds from the early sync sound days when a
sound recordist would be requested to run the “motor only sync” to create mute shots. Finally, the shot's run-
ning time also is listed under the Duration heading.
