8. The cut from the master to Katie's medium shot could clearly do with some work. We're trying to create
the effect that Katie is interrupting Joyce, but at the moment Joyce's dialogue cuts off abruptly and there is a
short gap of silence before Katie speaks. To fix this, select Scene 11 Slate 19 Take 3 (the third clip in the
Timeline) and press Control+S to expand its audio. Press += (equal sign) to zoom in closer to the edit
point and drag the end of the audio Out point to the right by 4.35 frames (see Figure 10.24).

This creates an overlap between the two characters' dialogue, but the end of Joyce's speech still cuts off
rather abruptly. Let's smooth this out further with an audio fade. Select the audio fade handle at the end of
Scene 11 Slate 19 Take 3 (you may need to adjust the Clip Height in the Clip Appearance panel to make this
clearer to see) and drag it to the left by 4 frames (see Figure 10.25). Press Shift+/ (forward slash) to play
back the edit. The sound works well now, but the picture cut can still be refined further. The timing of the
edit doesn't need any adjusting, so we can simply move the picture's edit point with a Roll edit. Expand the
