In-Depth Information
Figure 9.29 This angle breaks the 180-degree rule, switching the positions of the characters in the frame.
This leaves us with Scene 3 Slate 11 Take 1, which is the high wide angle from the top of the stairs. Press I
to mark an In point at 28 seconds 18 frames into the clip, just as Joyce hands Katie her case. Position the
playhead at 1 minute, 8 seconds, and 19 frames in the Timeline and press D to overwrite Scene 3 Slate 11
Take 1 to the Primary Storyline.
10. Let's finish the scene as planned with the close-up on Joyce at the stairs. Select and play Scene 3 Slate
12 Take 2 in the Event Browser. A third of the way into the clip, Katie walks across the shot and covers up
most of the frame with her body as she does so. We can use this to our advantage and create an artificial
wipe into this clip. Mark an In point at 4 seconds 1 frame into Scene 3 Slate 12 Take 2 and position the
playhead at 1 minute 17 seconds 5 frames in the Timeline. Press D to overwrite Scene 3 Slate 12 Take 2 into
the Primary Storyline. Skim to 1 minute 20 seconds 17 frames in the Timeline and press Option+] (right
bracket) to trim the end of the clip. Skim over to 40 seconds 21 frames in the Timeline and play the com-
pleted scene.
Now that you've followed along with the examples for Scenes 2 and 3, have a go at editing the rest of the
scenes in Act I. All the footage is available in the Setting Up The Story Collection in the Event Library. If you
get stuck, open the completed Project we've provided and try to re-create what we've done. The footage has
been included on the DVD for you to experiment. The best way to learn is by trying out different shots and
takes and seeing for yourself what works.
