In-Depth Information
Scene 3 Slate 10 Take 1 in the Event Browser. This is a medium shot of Katie that matches the framing of
Scene 3 Slate 14 Take 1. Matching the angle and size of the shot helps keep the cut invisible and makes for
a gentler edit than cutting back and forth between a wide shot and a closer angle. Once you move from a
master into closer coverage, you should avoid cutting back to a wider angle unless there is action or new in-
formation that can be delivered only by cutting back to the master.
Figure 9.23 A tighter angle on Katie as she regards Joyce suspiciously.
At the end of Scene 3 Slate 10 Take 1, you can hear Joyce say the word honestly. We don't need this line of
dialogue, because we're essentially using this shot of Katie as a cutaway and we can take Joyce's line from
another clip. Press Shift+2 to select Video Only as the Source Media and position the playhead at the end of
Scene 3 Slate 14 Take 1, which should be at 52 seconds 12 frames in the Timeline. Press D to overwrite
Scene 3 Slate 10 Take 1 to the Primary Storyline and press Shift+1 to switch the Source Media back to All.
6. We need to cut back to Joyce for her line “Really Katie, it's just you and me” and for that we have two
choices. It would be preferable to cut back to Scene 3 Slate 14 Take 1 to continue the matching shots, but
we also need to see Joyce walk over to the front door after she says the line. This part of the action is more
clearly covered in Scene 3 Slate 13 Take 2, which has a slightly wider framing to allow Joyce to walk to-
ward the door. Position the playhead at 54 seconds 22 frames in the Timeline just after Scene 3 Slate 10
Take 1. With the Filter pop-up menu still set to Favorites, select Scene 3 Slate 13 Take 2 in the Event
Browser and press W to insert the clip in the Primary Storyline.
7. Skim over to 40 seconds 21 frames in the Timeline and play the section that you've assembled for Scene
3 up to this point. You probably noticed that the first part of Joyce's dialogue for Scene 3 Slate 13 Take 2 is
missing and the line starts midway with “. . . it's just you and me.” This isn't a problem—we can run the
first part of the dialogue during the shot of Katie at the door (Scene 3 Slate 10 Take 1). To do that, select
Scene 3 Slate 13 Take 2 in the Timeline and press Control+S to expand the clip's audio (or double-click on
the clip's audio component). Select the audio In point for Scene 3 Slate 13 Take 2 and drag it to the left by 2
