In-Depth Information
12. Press the Home key to go to the beginning and press the Spacebar to play back the sequence. The last
clip in the sequence cuts back to Scene 2 Slate 3 Take 6, which shows our characters walking to the front
door. We could use this clip to finish the scene (after a bit of trimming), but it really doesn't give the viewer
any new information and it causes the scene to just fizzle out at the end. Is there a stronger way to finish this
scene? If you play back the sequence, you'll see Katie glance up at the window and then walk out of the
frame, with Joyce in the background watching after her (Scene 2 Slate 5 Take 1 in the Timeline). The des-
pondency in Joyce's expression should raise further questions for the viewer and, as a result, give us a much
stronger way to finish the scene.
Position the playhead at 40 seconds 21 frames in the Timeline, just before Joyce starts to follow Katie out of
the frame. Choose the Range Selection tool from the Tool menu and draw a selection from the playhead po-
sition to the end of the sequence (see Figure 9.17). Press A to switch back to the Select tool and then press
Delete to remove the selection.

You've now completed Scene 2 of Pranks.
Scene 3
In the next scene, Katie confronts Joyce about what she thinks she's seen at the window, but Joyce reassures her
that they're the only two people staying there and manages to coax her into the house. This scene provides addi-
tional insights into Katie's character by demonstrating how anxious she gets at the possibility of sharing the
house (and her new foster mother) with another child. This reluctance to mix with others is a concern for Joyce,
and she puts this forward to Katie when she tucks her into bed in a later scene. Joyce's insistence that they're
both alone in the house also should create some mystery and raise some questions for the viewer. Is Joyce ly-
ing? If not, who did Katie see at the window? Did Katie imagine what she saw or is someone hiding in the
house? The scene ends with Katie relenting and walking upstairs to choose a room.
Now that we know what the scene is about, let's look at the footage that we have to edit the scene. Select the
Keyword Collection Scene 3. This scene is made up of the following clips:
