Figure 7.2 A selected clip inside a Secondary Storyline.
To select the Secondary Storyline as a whole, click the gray bar that runs across the top so that the entire
storyline is highlighted with a yellow border. Click and hold this bar to drag the storyline anywhere in the
Timeline. After it has been selected, you can append, insert, and overwrite clips from the Event Browser direc-
tly inside the Secondary Storyline by using the same buttons and keyboard shortcuts that you're used to.
Working with Secondary Storylines
In the previous chapter, you added two Connected clips to the Bump in the Night sequence (Scene 8 Slate 56
Take 2 and Scene 8 Slate 55 Take 2). If you play back these clips, you'll see that the transition between them
needs trimming because there is some extraneous material at the start of the second clip. At the end of the first
clip, the actress begins to move her arm to swat away the spider, but in the clip that follows, her arm remains
stationary for a beat or two before it moves. A Ripple edit would easily solve this, but if you grab the In point to
Scene 8 Slate 55 Take 2 and drag to remove the unwanted material, the first clip doesn't ripple along with the
edit; instead, it leaves a space between the two clips (Figure 7.3).
Figure 7.3 Trimming a Connected clip doesn't ripple the edit and leaves a space.
