chapter 7
Completing the Cut
By now you should be very familiar with working in the Primary Storyline. You've learned how to edit clips
from the Event Browser onto the Primary Storyline and how to manipulate these clips with the various tools that
Final Cut Pro provides. You've also learned how to attach individual clips to the Primary Storyline as Connected
clips, ensuring that they always remain linked with the clip that they're attached to.
In this chapter, you'll complete the Bump in the Night sequence and learn how to incorporate Secondary St-
orylines and Compound clips in your projects. You'll finish off by adding a few transitions to the sequence and
learning how to work with the transition parameters in the Inspector.
Adding Cutaways
The beginning of the Bump in the Night sequence is a little bland because it just features a single shot of Katie
sleeping. Let's create a little suspense by foreshadowing what's to come with some spooky cutaway shots of the
toy box:
1. Select the Bump in the Night Collection in the Event Library and make sure the Event Browser's filter is
set to show All Clips.
2. Open the Bump in the Night Project in the Timeline by double-clicking on it in the Project Library.
3. In the Event Browser, select the cutaway clips by -clicking on them in the following order: Cutaway
Slate 65 Take 1, Cutaway Slate 66 Take 1, and Cutaway Slate 68 Take 1.
4. Place the playhead at the beginning of the edited sequence in the Timeline and press Q to connect the three
cutaway clips to the Primary Storyline (see Figure 7.1).
5. Select the three cutaway clips in the Timeline and choose Edit Overwrite to Primary Storyline to over-
write the Connected clips to the Primary Storyline.
6. Play back the section to see the result. The toy shots add just the right amount of creepiness to the begin-
ning of the sequence.
