you can enter a new duration with the keyboard and press Return. The end of the clip trims to reflect the new
duration, and the other clips in the edited sequence ripple to the new edit point.
You also can trim a clip's Out point to the skimmer or playhead's position in the Timeline. To do this, select the
end of the clip, skim to the position where you want to trim to, and press Shift+X.
There's an even faster method of trimming to the skimmer position that doesn't require you to select an edit
point first. To trim a clip's In point to the skimmer's position on a clip, press Option+[. To trim a clip's Out
point to the skimmer's position on a clip, press Option+]. If skimming is disabled, the same keyboard shortcuts
trim to the playhead's position. You also can choose Edit Trim Start or Edit Trim End to trim to the play-
head's position on a clip.
Let's use this method to perform a second Ripple edit on the Bump in the Night sequence and remove the
second instance of the actress bolting up in bed:
1. Open the Bump in the Night Project in the Timeline.
2. Place the skimmer over Scene 8 Slate 57 Take 2 at 01:06:05 in the Timeline.
3. Press Option+[ to trim the start of the clip to the skimmer's position.
4. Play back the edit to see the result. The repeated action of the actress bolting up in bed has now been re-
moved.
Performing a Roll edit
There are three more ways to trim a clip in the Timeline and all three can be accessed via the Trim tool, avail-
able in the Tool menu (or by pressing T).
If you hover over an edit point with the Trim tool, you'll notice the familiar filmstrip icon pointing left or right,
signifying a Ripple edit. This is because a Ripple edit also can be performed with the Trim tool. When you
place the cursor over the middle of the edit point, the filmstrip icon points in both left and right directions (see
Figure 6.5). This icon signifies a Roll edit.
