chapter 6
Editing the Rough Cut
With the clips roughly assembled in the correct order in the Timeline, you have a basic framework to work from
and can begin to shape the sequence further. You can trim unwanted material from these clips and add additional
shots comprising of different takes and angles until the scene or sequence begins to come together. From here,
you can determine the flow and pace of a scene and make further adjustments accordingly, either by increasing
the frequency of the cuts or easing up on them to allow the scene to breathe.
In this chapter, you'll continue to work with the Bump in the Night sequence and learn how to use Final Cut Pro's
trimming tools to fine-tune the edit points in your sequence. You'll also learn how to use Connected clips to place
additional shots in the Timeline.
Trimming Clips
Trimming is the process of adjusting a clip's edit point so that a shot flows smoothly into the next shot. Trimming
involves shortening or lengthening a clip in the Timeline to either fine-tune an edit point or remove unwanted
material. Extraneous material, such as a repeated action or line of dialogue, often occurs in two neighboring shots
in a first rough assembly. You came across this earlier in the Bump in the Night assembly when the actress ap-
peared to bolt up in bed twice, having repeated this action in two consecutive clips. You'll be removing this unne-
cessary material using some of Final Cut Pro's trimming tools in the next section.
A clip in an edited sequence may contain extra media that isn't being used in the Timeline. This unused media is
known as a clip's handles; it occurs when a selected portion of a clip is added to the Timeline. To see whether a
clip has handles, simply click on a clip's edit point with the Select tool. If extra media is available, a yellow
bracket is displayed around the side of the clip. If no handles are available or you run out of media during the
trimming process, the bracket is red (see Figure 6.1).
