Figure 7-22. An official MLB baseball
The mass and dimensions of an official baseball, as defined by Major League Baseball
(MLB), are shown in Table 7-8. As was the case with soccer, there is some range of possible
mass and dimension values. The coefficient of restitution for a baseball is somewhat dependent on
the velocity of the ball and ranges from 0.525 to 0.55.

The other piece of baseball equipment we will discuss is the bat. According to MLB regu-
lations, the bat is a “smooth, round stick” made from “one piece of solid wood.” Aluminum
bats are allowed in college and youth baseball. Bats are tapered. The end of the bat the player
grabs onto, known as the handle , has a smaller diameter than the other end of the bat, which
is known as the barrel . Two typical baseball bats are shown in Figure 7-23.

The mass and dimension specifications for a baseball bat are shown in Table 7-9. The MLB
regulations specify a maximum diameter and length of the bat. The mass of a bat can vary, but
typical values are 0.79-0.96 kg (28-34 oz ).
