The Basket and Backboard
The objective in basketball is to shoot or dunk the ball through a basket that consists of a metal
ring, also known as the hoop, and a net that is suspended below the hoop. The basic schematic
of the basket and backboard is shown in Figure 7-19. The basket is attached to a backboard that
is either at the top of a metal post or suspended from the ceiling. The basket hoop is 5.79 m (10 ft )
above the court, and the center of it is located at a distance of 1.6 m from the end line. The
backboard is a flat surface placed behind the basket to allow for bank shots and to help keep
the ball in the field of play.

The basic dimensions and locations of the basket and backboard are shown in Table 7-6.
The term “hoop diameter” refers to the diameter of the metal circle that forms the basket hoop.
