FiG. 3.7 Buildings in place, and house
components in group (see bottom left).
Stage 7: Building Grouping
Goal : To organize the model efficiently using grouping and to add extra
building detail.
Input : Grouping and additional model detailing.
Tools : Plug-ins such as Windowizer and Roof.
Throughout my project design, I chose to design the existing surround-
ings first and then move on to putting my ideas from paper into SketchUp.
With more buildings and details added to the model, it can become trickier
getting round your model. It is very useful to be able to hide certain areas
of your model to simplify your view and make model building easier. As
touched on earlier in the section “Useful model building help,” the Outliner
tool is great for organizing your model. It is possible to group like objects
and rename them with entity information or directly in the Outliner window.
All buildings were put into different groups and could be hidden by the click
of a mouse, which is very useful when objects overlap or your model view is
obscured.
During the design phase, I used two useful plug-ins: The first is called
Windowizer, which helps to create impressive windows on any surfaces with
a variety of options for layout configuration. The second one, Roof, helps to
create roofs of all shapes and sizes.
