Dreamhost
For the past six years, I (Rocco) have personally been a huge fan of the hosting
company Dreamhost ( http://dreamhost.com/ ) which is a great little company created by
four very ambitious Computer Science undergraduates back in 1997 (see Figure 13-8).
Dreamhost has been around for a while, and while they have had some growing pains in
the past, the service that they provided for me has been rock solid, with very little
hiccups. Their prices are extremely competitive, usually coming in at a base of $9USD a
month, and they even offer their customers unlimited bandwidth and unlimited storage.
Figure 13-8. Dreamhost has been hosting millions of sites on the Internet since 1997. Currently they host over
500,000 sites running on the WordPress open source content management solution
Dreamhost offers a variety of hosting with the basic form of hosting being in a shared
environment. While shared hosting is fine for basic projects, there are some major
limitations to going that route. For starters, you're sharing an environment with everyone
else on that server and if someone uploads a script to the server that somehow
manages to hog up a bunch of the server's resources or even crash the server, then
everyone on that server suffers. On top of that, there is very little customization you can
perform on a shared server. You cannot install custom applications or services to run in
the background, and you cannot make any changes to the web server configuration
files.
