In-Depth Information
7.8
HRTEM images of (a) transverse and (b) longitudinal cross-sections
of 5wt% MWCNT-SiO 2 composite showing mechanical bonding
between MWCNTs and silica glass.
7.9
HRTEM images showing (a) transverse cross-section of a MWCNT
reinforced in silica glass matrix composite and (b) parallel layers of
MWCNTs also evident in longitudinal cross-section.

interface due to carbothermal reduction has also been reported (Seeger
et al., 2002). Figure 7.8 shows HRTEM images of the interface in CNT-
SiO 2 composites revealing physical contact of CNTs with the surrounding
glass matrix without the formation of any new phase due to chemical
reaction between CNTs and silica (Subhani, 2012b). Similar observations of
the absence of an intermediate phase have been reported in other CNT
composites with glass/glass-ceramic matrices such as SiO 2 (Ning et al.,
2004), borosilicate (Thomas et al., 2009), aluminoborosilicate
(Mukhopadhyay et al., 2010, Otieno et al., 2010) and barium aluminosilicate
(Ye et al., 2006). HRTEM has also been used to observe longitudinal and
transverse cross-sections of CNTs embedded in composites (Fig. 7.9).
