7.5 XRD spectra of (a) as-synthesized CNTs (b) silica glass and CNT-
SiO 2 composites containing 10wt% CNTs; an amorphous matrix is
observed with little crystallization in both silica glass and composites.
XRD is frequently used to detect the retention of CNTs in composites
after sintering involving high temperatures, i.e. up to 1200
C, as in CNT-
SiO 2 composites (Subhani et al., 2011). A characteristic (002) XRD peak of
as-synthesized CNTs (Fig. 7.5(a)) is clearly identified in composite speci-
mens compared to pure silica glass densified by PLS (Fig. 7.5(b)).
