locally enhance their luorescences when deposited on surfaces or as
free probes. In addition, surfaces that have well deined patterns and
structures on the nanometric scale (e.g., two-dimensional photonic
crystal slabs) can provide increased luorescence intensities by a
factor of up to 100 as opposed to smooth surfaces. 112 Along with
advanced nanotechnology, we can foresee that SEF techniques soon
will become popular and powerful techniques for the analysis of
trace amounts of analytes and for cell imaging.
