1.5 Summary
One-dimensional.systems.and.wires.are.of.great.interest.to.various.ields.in.the.nanosci-
ence.and.nanotechnology.communities,.especially.for.nanoelectronics..In.this.report,.we.
demonstrate.the.possibility.of.using.protein-NP.hybrids.as.building.blocks.for.various.1D.
systems.that.may.later.be.controlled.in.several.parameters:.length.(number.of.consecutive.
units),.interunit.distance,.conductivity,.selective.attachment.to.surfaces,.formation.meth-
ods,. and. more.. Using. the. SP1-GNP. hybrids. in. a. preprogrammed. way. will. enable. us. to.
gain.good.control.over.these.parameters..Moreover,.the.combination.of.a.conducting.core.
in. a. modiiable. isolating. scaffold. gives. these. systems. additional. advantages. over. other.
exposed.wires.with.uniform.structure.and.chemistry..We.demonstrated.spontaneous.for-
mation. of. nanowires. made. from. the. SP1-GNP. hybrid. building. blocks.. We. also. demon-
strated.wires.that.are.formed.by.combining.the.SP1.protein.and.GNP.hybrids.with.DNA..
Further.development.of.these.structures,.e.g.,.by.reducing.the.interunit.distance.between.
the.GNPs,.will.produce.a.highly.controlled.conductive.wire..By.controlling.the.distance,.
the.composition,.and.the.size.of.the.inner.particle,.we.have.a.new.way.of.investigating.1D.
conductance.mechanisms.at.hand..Combined.with.nonlinear.conductance.behavior,.this.
family.of.conducting.wires.can.serve.as.future.nanodevices.
