In-Depth Information
Design Choice To select between two or more options
Diameter The length of a straight line that passes through the center of a circular
object and terminates at either end where it intersects the surface of the object.
This measurement type is not used in CG, but may be used to determine radius.
Dichromatic Distance An effect of aerial perspective where all colors are progres-
sively eliminated until in the farthest distance only two remain: the primary light
color and primary shadow color. A variety of tonal difference may exist, but will
be shallow in extent.
Digitizer A device capable of recording coordinates based on the position of its
base and the stylus-like pointer relative to its base. When used properly, the
device can accurately recreate the surface of most three-dimensional objects.
Dimension The product of a measurement .
Direct Entry A method of modeling where the artist enters coordinates by typing
them in instead of using the GUI or any tool to create them.
Directional Light A light that projects along parallel vectors only.
Distort To change the shape of something.
DPI Dots per inch. A ratio of the number of pixels to each unit of linear measure-
ment. DPI is sometimes used to refer to non-English units of measurement.
Duplicate To copy every part of a given object's defi nition exactly.
Edge Straight-line segments that lie along the boundary of every polygon and
serve to connect the vertices of one or more faces. This word has no meaning for
NURBS geometry, where curve and boundary satisfy the same function.
Edge Layout The orientation of edges in a polyset. Because there is more than one
way to connect vertices, the edge layout can have a strong affect on the appear-
ance of a model.
Edge Star Formation A group of fi ve or more edges that share a common vertex.
Editing To modify.
Edit Point An element of a NURBS curve. It lies on the curve itself and defi nes
position of a point along the curve, and tangents at the point.
Element A subordinate part of a larger geometry whole.
Elevation A drawing representing a view of an object that includes its height.
Ellipse A circle that has been modifi ed so that it does not have a 1.0 aspect ratio.
Environmental Fog An effect in CG where colors become less distinct over dis-
tance. This imitates aerial perspective , but is usually a serious exaggeration of it
that is used more to optimize renderings by eliminating detail than to achieve an
imitation of a real world effect.
Extraneous Unnecessary.
Extrude To project a face or group of selected faces along a chosen vector, and
then create duplicates of the original faces at that location and connect them with
new faces to the original selection of faces.
Eye-hand Coordination The ability to coordinate visual information as observed
through the eyes with movements of one's hand, especially when drawing or
painting. Often mistaken as the primary skill of an artist.
Face A polygonal plane defi ned by a minimum of three vertices and three edges.
