2 D Two-dimensional
2D Projection The act of projecting three-dimensional objects onto a two-
dimensional picture plane.
3 D Three-dimensional
3D paint A method for creating texture maps where the artist paints directly onto
a 3D object.
3D Scanner A device that uses a laser to scan an object and capture coordinate
data for its surfaces. These devices are most commonly used to capture or mea-
sure complex 3D objects.
3D space Three-dimensional or virtual space.
Absolute Pertaining to a measurement of a defi nite fi xed amount.
Acute Angle An angle of ninety degrees or less.
Adjacent Immediately adjoining without intervening space; sharing a common
border.
Aerial Perspective The effect of an accumulation of light refl ected from minute
airborne particles over great distances muting the color of distant objects.
Anti-alias A method to reduce contrast between adjacent pixels with different
color values.
Align To arrange according to a value derived from another object, especially posi-
tion or normal. To arrange elements or objects so that they are parallel or straight.
Alignment The act of aligning to cause objects to be aligned.
Angle The measure of deviation of two points from a common location.
Anomaly In CG, an unexpected result for which there is no known cause.
Application A computer program
Arbitrary Axis An axis designated by the user, as opposed to the global axes of
the global coordinate system.
Arc A curve in the shape of an incomplete circle or ellipse.
ASCII fi le A readable text-only fi le
Aspect Ratio The height to width ratio of any given object. If an object's height is
3 and its width is 1.5, then it has an aspect ratio of 2. If it is the other way around,
with a height of 1.5 and a width of 3, the ar = .5.
