Optimization
9.5.1
Introduction
If you have cleaned up the likeness, technical, and construction errors mentioned
earlier in this chapter, your model should be fairly well optimized. There are few
optimization-specifi c items to consider, but they should be checked before you
move on to organizing your model.
9.5.2
Excessive Edge Loops
An edge loop is a group of edges that encircles your object to make a continuous
ring of edges (Fig. 9.31 ). These are essential for joint structures in characters and
other things that must fl ex during animation. They add many new faces to a model
because they affect the entire circumference of the part they are added to, so they
should be used sparingly and only with a good reason. If you don't need them for
animation, it is worth checking to see if some of the new faces created by this tool
can be collapsed.
