part will have to be connected to the surrounding face(s) to prevent holes. These
connections are unnecessary if the polygons of the original face are recreated with-
out the shape of the incised detail carved into it. Some modelers devote as much as
20 % of their models to this kind of detail. Eliminate it, and the models are now
20 % more effi cient.

Subdivision
Do not subdivide an object without a good reason. Subdividing an object creates
many new vertices. If this is done too often, the poly count will rise to unaccept-
able levels.

Vertex Merging
Combine static elements along common edges and weld their vertices whenever
possible. Do not do this if they must animate separately or if they must be
grouped separately. This is because vertices occupy memory even if they do not
defi ne new faces. The fewer vertices you have, the lower the memory cost of
your object is.
