Perching is to chicks what first steps are to babies—an important milestone in
their development. Some chicks will have the confidence and balance to try it as
early as the end of the first week. We built a beginner's perch by nailing together
three sturdy tree branches in an shape and leaning it against the side of the box.
Brave Tilda was of course the first to hop up. Amelia looked a bit seasick when we
coaxed her on.
