CHICK WATER FOUNTS
Chick founts are small and inexpensive and worth the investment. Don't try to save a
few dollars by buying adult chicken founts they'll “grow into.” If one of those gallon
containers spilled, your birds could die from the dampness or possibly even drown. You
can get small plastic two-part founts or buy the ones designed to attach to mason jars
(which I prefer). They're made of sturdier metal and can utilize old pint or quart jars you
have stored. Just make sure to sanitize the jars first by boiling them before filling them
with your chicks' water.
CHICK FEEDERS
Like the founts, you should opt for baby-size feeders. They come as small plastic tum-
blers, screw-on attachments for mason jars, or trough-type feeders, which I'm actually
quite fond of. The ones meant for chicks have little holes that force the birds to keep
some sort of inline order during a feeding frenzy. Yes, you can always keep it simple and
just place a pie tin in there, but chicks are messy eaters. Brooder cleaning is a lot easier
when you have a specific and orderly place for chick starter feed.
