Some breeds, such as
the Silkie, are “true bantams” and come only small-sized. Most other breeds, includ-
ing all of the others in this top-ten list, are bred in standard as well as bantam weights.
Damp conditions can make these minis vulnerable to a variety of health problems.
If you're raising banties in areas with a hard winter you'll need to take extra precau-
tions to keep them dry and draft-free during the cold months. In hot climates, make
sure to provide plenty of ventilation and a good fan.

This bird is the real deal: a beautiful brown hen and a
handsome rooster. A medium-size bird, usually partridge brown, it's not a fancy chick-
en by any means but a truly low-key beauty. These are birds you look at and then do a
double take because you didn't initially notice the patterns on the brown feathers or the
green sparkling tail feathers of the rooster.
