In-Depth Information
The only supplement you can give chicks under eight weeks of age is grit, which
helps them digest their feed.
Scratch is a treat or supplement but should not replace protein-rich layer ration as
your flock's primary feed.
Feed from a bag isn't all your birds should eat, however. Supplement it with kit-
chen scraps, and they will adore you. I keep a kitchen-compost pail by my sink, and
everything from bacon bits to carrot shavings falls into there for the chickens. As
long as you keep the garlic and onions away from the birds (which won't hurt them
but will flavor your eggs!) you'll be turning trash into eggs. Not a bad turnaround.
