cell diameter from 10 to 40 mm. The transducer (phased array)
has a focal length of 140 mm and employs 256 elements operat-
ing at frequencies between 1.2 and 1.5 MHz. Another impor-
tant feature of the Sonalleve system is its automatic temperature
feedback control system, which modulates power to the acoustic
sources while the focus is being scanned based on MR-measured
temperature feedback (Enholm et al. 2010). Experiments have
shown that under- and overtreatment can be prevented with
this control system. Moreover, a recently completed multicenter
prospective clinical trial showed that volumetric MR-HIFU is
safe and feasible in the treatment of uterine fibroids (Voogt et al.
2012). Finally, this system is also being used by investigators to
perform animal studies (Hijnen et al. 2012).
