3.2. TYPES OF MONITORING
There are many different reasons why water monitoring might be
undertaken. The key to selection of the most appropriate monitoring strat-
egy is to consider what questions are being asked; there is no “one size fits
all” solution to monitoring and certain tools and techniques will be more
suited for certain types of monitoring. Different authors describe various
types of monitoring approaches. We have chosen to classify monitoring
strategies according to the classification below, adapted from Refs 4 and 1 :
1. surveillance monitoring aimed at assessing long-term water quality
