16.2.2 Sculpting with Vector Displacement
There are four basic means by which vector displacement can prove useful in the
sculpting workflow: via direct surface imprinting with stencils and stamps, as a
tool or brush-tip modifier to produce different sculpting effects, as a means of
transferring details between meshes, and to recreate detail in supported renderers.
Stamps and custom tools. Vector displacements can be utilized in the form of
stencils or, at a more finite level, as stamps. Mudbox allows access to VDMs
as stamps to enhance existing or custom sculpting tools. Stamps can be applied
to allow specific details to repeat across a surface or as a means of shaping, or
customizing, a brush tip. This is extremely valuable for achieving specific design
elements such as trims, stitching, buttons or hard-surface aspects (corners, bevels,
onlays,etc.)whereprecisionisdesired(see Figure16.2 ) .
Stencils. VDMs accessed as stencils are typically used for, but not limited to,
larger details and more complex structures. Stencils are useful for sculpting in-
teresting features and irregular textured effects that would otherwise be dicult
