microchip is usually inserted in the head near the ear or in the tail. A microchip must be read
with a scanner and can sometimes migrate under the skin.
Wattles
Wattles are one or two long, thin bags of skin that hang down from the neck and can appear in
any breed. No useful function has ever been identified for them. They typically are removed
to give the dairy goat a cleaner neckline. Wattles can cause problems when they are caught on
fences and torn or are sucked and chewed on by other goats. Wattles can be snipped off young
kids with a pair of sharp, clean scissors. The wound heals without a scar.
Health Problems of Kids
Kids that are fed colostrum, kept in a clean dry environment out of drafts, given outdoor exer-
cise, and fed carefully usually will grow up with few health problems. The most common
health problems are diarrhea and constipation. Ordinary diarrhea can be caused by eating too
fast, consuming too much milk or milk that is too cold, or changing feeds too quickly. Reduce
feed and offer it at more frequent intervals. If the diarrhea continues, try replacing half of the
kid's milk with water for 48 hours. In cases of severe diarrhea, or scours, withdraw all milk
and feed for 24 hours, and give the kid warm chamomile or black tea with charcoal or oak
bark powder mixed in it. Kaopectate also can be administered to stop the diarrhea. When the
diarrhea stops, resume the kid's regular feeding program gradually. Continued severe or
bloody diarrhea may indicate a bacterial infection requiring veterinary attention.
A kid with diarrhea can become dehydrated quickly. If the kid's skin sticks together when
pinched, give it an electrolyte immediately to replace lost body fluids.
ELECTROLYTE MIX
• 1 quart purified water
• ¼ teaspoon baking soda
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 2 tablespoons honey or white Karo syrup
Mix well. Make up a new batch daily and feed in place of milk, doubling the usual quantity.
Return to regular milk after one and a half to two days.
