Gates
Fences as well as gates and doors must be made escape-proof. Gates should open inward so
goats cannot push their way out. Some goat keepers install strong springs that snap the gates
shut. Place latches low on the outside of the gate where goats cannot lean over and reach
them. Goats are notorious for opening latches on doors and gates; make certain yours are dur-
able and lock firmly into place so your goats cannot escape the enclosure or let themselves in-
to the room where hay or feed is stored. It is a good idea to put a goat-proof latch on any refri-
gerator door or any cupboards that hold medicines. Crossties and frames should be on the out-
side of a gate where the goats cannot use them to get a foothold. Gates and fences should nev-
er be topped with sharp pickets because goats can get their heads and hooves stuck between
them.
