Here is an overview of the visible parts of the udder and their respective functions:
• Udder cistern: The area above the teat that holds the milk; also called the gland cistern.
Thisisthepartoftheudderthatappearsfull.Eachcisternholdsabout1poundofmilkat
a time.
• Teat cistern: The reservoir between the streak canal and the udder cistern, through which
the milk passes on its way down and out of the udder
• Streak canal: The final passageway for milk out of the teat
• Furstenberg's rosette: A many-folded mucus membrane that works as a plug to prevent
leakage. It also keeps bacteria from entering the streak canal and traveling up into the
udder.
