positions, producing recognizable lip and skin configurations and, in speech, modify the sounds ema-
nating from the labial opening. In particular, the muscles around the mouth are extremely flexible and
capable of producing a variety of shapes and subtle movements. A muscle of particular importance is
the orbicularis oris ( Figure 10.2 , muscle number 7; Color Plate 8), which wraps around the mouth and is
connected to several muscles that are connected to the skull.
