In-Depth Information
Cape Colony restaurant, widely considered one of the world's best hotel restaurants, in Cape
Town's Mount Nelson Hotel.
Wellington in puff pastry, but he really
takes off with the contemporary side of
the menu, where you'll find intriguing
dishes like ostrich tartare with poached
quail egg, braised bitter-chocolate-fla-
vored oxtail stuffed in agnolotti pasta,
Vietnamese black-lacquered lamb, or
grilled tuna on pineapple carpaccio. A
chef's table for 6 to 10 diners has been set
up in the heart of Mancais's sparkling
kitchen, and special food-and-wine eve-
nings are offered regularly, to showcase
the products of South Africa's buzzing
wine industry.
Given the stately profile of the Mount
Nelson's exterior, it's surprising to see
how crisp and clean-lined the guest room
decor is, incorporating traditional ele-
ments—antique reproductions, vintage-
print fabrics, and plump upholstered
seating—into a muted, refined look that's
utterly contemporary. With two pristine
outdoor swimming pools, an extensive fit-
ness center, a holistic spa, tennis courts,
and access to several golf courses, the
Nellie's as close to a resort as you can get
within the city limits. It's a great second
chapter for this vintage old lady.
