French vineyard owners are very protec-
tive of their appellations, and nowhere
more so than in the southern Rhone Valley
wine area known as Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Fraudsters, disease, inferior wine, and
poor grapes are all kept at bay with strict
controls that ensure that the world-famous
name retains its prestige and reputation
for excellent wines.
So in 1954, when a new threat appeared,
an emergency meeting of the town coun-
cil was called: A new law was decreed,
declaring it illegal for flying saucers to fly
over, land, or take off from the vineyards.
