The Fall in the Finger Lakes

Upstate New York is beautiful in the fall,
with autumn colors of red, purple, and
orange forming a blazing backdrop that
attracts lovers of the outdoors. The Finger
Lakes—a cluster of seven long, narrow,
and deep lakes (on a map they look like a
line of tadpoles gravitating north towards
Lake Ontario)—are particularly attractive,
especially since this region has the added
twist of tangy grape aromas in the air.
The Finger Lakes area is the country's
second biggest wine-producing area after
Napa Valley, with more than 100 wineries
dotted amid rolling hills, lakes, and wheat
fields 6 hours north of Manhattan. The
wineries here are a beehive of activity in
